A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in your eye. When people develop cataracts, seeing through a cloudy crystalline lens is like looking through a frosty or fogged up window. It can make it more difficult to read, drive a car or just blur your vision in general. Most cataracts develop slowly and don’t disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will interfere with your vision and will need to be surgically removed.
The perception of most people is that cataracts are linked to aging. However, they can be present in newborns or develop shortly after birth. They can also develop as a secondary problem due to diabetes, alcohol consumption, certain medications, smoking, prior eye surgery or eye injuries.

Treatment from Our Practice
Our doctors can diagnose and manage your cataract development. Your visit will include a comprehensive vision exam, an assessment of health history, an evaluation of symptoms and complaints and counseling on long term management.
The most appropriate treatment for a patient depends on the level of vision impairment present. For early development, monitoring is the standard treatment. As a cataract matures, patients will benefit from the use of anti-glare coatings and UV light protection on their glasses. Frequent prescription changes may also be necessary. When a cataract reaches the point that surgery is required to correct it, our practice will refer you to a skilled surgeon and assist you with all of your surgical aftercare.
